"Safe Meal"

“Safe Meal” is a tribute to the comfort and familiarity of my favorite breakfast: boiled eggs, bacon, and buttered toast. This simple meal holds deep personal significance, as it was the very first thing I learned to make. When I was eight years old, my mother taught me how to boil eggs so I could prepare a homemade breakfast before school while she was at work. Her hands-on approach ensured that even in her absence, I could take care of myself and enjoy something nourishing rather than relying on processed foods like Pop-Tarts or Eggo waffles.

As an adult with anxiety, this meal remains my default, a source of comfort and grounding. It connects me to the warmth of home and the stability of my childhood, especially when I’m feeling homesick. Whenever I visit my mother, this is the breakfast I gravitate toward because she always has the ingredients on hand—eggs, toast, and turkey bacon—just as she always has love and care to offer. “Safe Meal” captures the essence of this connection, celebrating the simplicity and power of food as a reminder of home and family.
