"Cold Welcome" is an emotional piece about a vulnerable, impressionable young Cerena. When I began attending the prestigious suburban high school, the Episcopal Academy, I was filled with hope and determination. I had a clear vision of my future and carried everything I needed—symbolized by the bags in the painting—to achieve my goals as an artist. Stepping onto the lush, green campus felt amazing, like the start of something transformative. But as soon as I walked indoors, the coldness of the environment was undeniable.
It wasn’t the school itself that felt unwelcoming; it was the way the students made me feel—like I didn’t belong. The white walls seemed to amplify the sense of isolation and nervousness I felt. Still, I held onto my hope, my drive, and my belief that I could overcome the discomfort to create the future I envisioned for myself.
