"Sad Hair"

“Sad Hair” reflects my journey of self-expression and identity during my time at a prestigious suburban high school I attended on scholarship. Coming from inner-city Philadelphia, I was deeply grateful for the opportunities the school provided. However, I often felt out of place. To fit in, I customized my uniform to match my peers’ style and straightened my naturally curly hair every two weeks. Over time, these efforts damaged my hair, leaving my curls lifeless. Despite my attempts to blend in, my individuality, particularly my skin color, always set me apart from other classmates in ways I couldn’t change. This piece is about my battle between gratitude and conforming at the expense of authenticity. I hope “Sad Hair” encourages others to reflect on their own battles with self-acceptance and the importance of valuing what makes them unique.
