"Don't Judge Me"

"Don’t Judge Me" reflects my journey from a Philadelphia charter school, severely underfunded and burdened by corruption, to a prestigious private high school I attended on scholarship. Growing up, I was part of a program designed to help inner-city kids access “higher education.” While my first school struggled with limited resources, this new school was worlds away and surrounded by lush greenery and privilege.

On my first day, I immediately felt like an outsider. Even though I wore the same uniform, my version stood out — too long, too different — and the teasing started. The physical setting felt open and bright, with manicured lawns and grand buildings, but the social atmosphere felt closed off and unwelcoming. This piece is about my identity in a place where I felt both inspired and scrutinized. I want "Don’t Judge Me" to speak to those moments when we’re stuck between what others see and what we know of ourselves, especially in unfamiliar spaces.
